COALSI triple action filtration

A combination of biological, chemical and physical processes makes our activated carbon filter mats so powerful and durable.

Why activated charcoal against odors

Activated carbon has an extremely large specific surface area due to its porous structure. This large surface area offers many binding sites for molecules and functions in a similar way to a sponge. Thanks to the natural properties of activated carbon, odors can be filtered sustainably and effectively.

Chemically

Activated carbon can form chemical compounds with certain molecules. This happens primarily with molecules that are chemically reactive or polar, such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) or ammonia (NH3), substances that result from rotting processes in ducts and in exhaust systems. COALSI's special mats are impregnated with chemical reagents to increase the chemical reaction and convert odor-intensive substances into less annoying or odorless substances.

Physically

Activated charcoal contains macro, meso and micropores. The micropores are particularly effective at adsorbing small molecules, which are often responsible for odor. Thanks to the unique structure of COALSI filter mats, the activated carbon has a particularly large surface area to which molecules from the air are bound.

Biologically

Microorganisms from the exhaust air settle on the loosely structured PU mat. The exhaust air flowing through supplies the microorganisms with nutrients, which activates them and multiplies. Hydrogen sulfuric substances are effectively broken down and filter performance is significantly increased.

How COALSI odour filter works

The activated carbon used in our filters consists of more than 90% carbon with a large internal surface area (approx. 1200 m²/g). 4-5g of charcoal therefore corresponds approximately to the area of a soccer field. This area is used to adsorb unwanted, odor-causing substances from the air.

To increase the functionality of the filter mats, an ionizing fleece is integrated between the two activated carbon filters, which further increases the lifespan and reactivity of the activated carbon.

The COALSI filter mats consist of three different mats: a coarse-pored gas distribution mat to optimally distribute the incoming air over the surface, the ionizing fleece (ITS mat) and a fine-pored activated carbon mat to neutralize the odors of the exhaust air.

There are special impregnations for cases of hardship when activated carbon alone cannot filter all gases out of the air. Compared to the standard mat, these are even more effective against:

alkaline gases, e.g. ammonia, amines

acidic gases, e.g. sulfur compounds

hydrogen sulphide

The COALSI filter mat is found in all of our odour control products
